Day 1

Railay — The Island That Isn't

🌅 Morning

Longtail Arrival & Railay West

Longtail boats leave Ao Nang pier every 15 minutes (฿100/person, 15 minutes) and arrive at Railay West — a crescent of pale sand backed by sheer limestone karsts draped in jungle. Drop your bag at your guesthouse and spend the first hour simply walking the beach from end to end. The scale of the cliffs is overwhelming at close range. Railay West is the calmer beach and good for swimming in the morning. Hire a kayak (฿200–300/hour) to paddle out and look back at the full limestone panorama — the view from the water is extraordinary.

Tip: Longtails from Ao Nang run 7am–6pm. After 6pm you need to arrange a private boat (฿1,500–2,000). Book accommodation with private beach access on Railay West for the quieter side.
☀️ Afternoon

Phra Nang Cave & Rock Climbing

Walk the 10-minute path through the peninsula to Phra Nang Beach — consistently rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with emerald water, white sand, and cathedral karsts. The sacred Phra Nang Cave at the cliff face is filled with offerings to the sea goddess believed to protect fishermen. Non-climbers can watch from the sand as rock climbers scale the dramatic limestone faces directly above the beach — routes of all grades are found here. Climbing schools on Railay (Wee's Climbing School, Hot Rock) offer half-day introductions from ฿1,000–1,500 including gear.

Tip: Phra Nang fills up from 11am–3pm with longtail day-trips from Ao Nang. Walk there at 8am or after 4pm for dramatically fewer people. The cave offerings are real sacred objects — treat them with respect.
🌙 Evening

Sunset Viewpoint & Railay East

Hike the steep 45-minute trail (wooden ladder sections, ropes) from Railay East to the viewpoint above the peninsula for a panoramic sunset over the Andaman Sea, karst islands, and Ao Nang. Descend carefully as it gets dark quickly. Railay East is the mangrove side — less scenic but where the budget bungalows and restaurants cluster. Dinner at one of the beachside restaurants: pad thai (฿120–150), seafood BBQ platters (฿350–500), or Massaman curry (฿130). Beer Chang from ฿70. The atmosphere is relaxed and the crowd is a mix of climbers, divers, and beach-hoppers.

Tip: The viewpoint trail starts behind Railay Viewpoint Resort on Railay East. It's steep and muddy after rain — wear proper shoes. The sunset is worth every scramble.

Budget tips

Accommodation is pricier than mainland Thailand

Railay has no road access so everything is boat-delivered, pushing prices up. Budget bungalows on Railay East: ฿600–1,200/night. Mid-range on Railay West: ฿2,000–4,000. Staying in Ao Nang ($10–20/night) and day-tripping saves significant money.

Boat costs add up — plan them

Ao Nang to Railay: ฿100/person each way. Island-hopping longtail (4-island tour): ฿1,500–2,000/boat split between passengers. Book group tours from Ao Nang for ฿500–700/person including snorkelling gear.

Rock climbing is exceptional value

Railay has some of Thailand's best sport climbing — 130+ bolted routes above the sea. Half-day beginner course: ฿1,000–1,500. Full-day with 2:1 instructor ratio: ฿2,000–2,500. Gear rental only (if you have skills): ฿500/day.

Eat at Railay East for local prices

Railay West beachfront restaurants charge resort prices. Walk 5 minutes to Railay East for the same food at half the cost. The small shops on Railay East sell water, snacks, and essentials at reasonable prices — stock up there.

Budget breakdown

Daily costs per person in Thai Baht. Railay runs more expensive than mainland Thailand due to boat logistics — Ao Nang is the budget-friendly base with easy day-trip access.

🎒 Budget ✨ Mid-Range 💎 Splurge
Accommodation ฿600–1,200
Food ฿200–400
Transport ฿200–400
Activities ฿300–600

Daily Total ฿1,400–2,800

Practical info

Getting to Railay

  • From Ao Nang: longtail boats run 7am–6pm (฿100/person, 15 min). After hours, charter a private boat for ฿1,500–2,000. There is no pier at Railay — boats beach directly on the sand
  • From Krabi Town: longtail to Railay from Chao Fah pier (฿150/person, 45 min) or charter a speedboat. Krabi Airport is 18km from Ao Nang — shared minivan ฿150–200/person
  • Fly to Krabi (KBV) from Bangkok (1hr, ฿800–2,000), Kuala Lumpur (1.5hr), or Singapore (1.5hr). Direct connections from most major Southeast Asian hubs
🌊

Beaches & Swimming

  • Railay West: best swimming, calmer water, stunning backdrop. Railay East: mangroves, muddy at low tide — not for swimming. Phra Nang: most beautiful but busiest 11am–3pm
  • Sea conditions depend on season: Nov–Apr is flat and turquoise. May–Oct can bring waves, rain, and rough boat crossings. Serious storms occasionally cancel longtail services in Oct
  • Jellyfish appear occasionally — ask locals before swimming. Lifeguards are not present. The water is generally safe for swimming in dry season
🧗

Rock Climbing

  • Railay is world-class for sport climbing with 130+ routes on limestone above the Andaman Sea. Grades range from 5a (beginner) to 8b+ (elite). Best conditions Nov–Mar when it's dry
  • Reputable climbing schools: Wee's Climbing School, Hot Rock Climbing, King Climbers. All offer beginner courses, guiding, and gear rental. Always climb with a certified local guide on your first visit
  • Do not free-solo or climb without proper instruction. Routes change seasonally and local guides know current conditions, loose holds, and safe descents
📱

Connectivity & Money

  • Mobile signal on Railay is weak — most resorts have WiFi but it is unreliable. Download offline maps and content before leaving Ao Nang. Save hotel WhatsApp numbers for boat coordination
  • No ATMs on Railay itself. Bring enough cash from Ao Nang or Krabi — most restaurants and guesthouses accept cash only. Cards accepted at a few mid-range resorts
  • Tourist SIM from Krabi Airport or Ao Nang: DTAC or AIS for ฿299–399 (30 days data). Coverage drops in the karst shadow on Railay East

Cultural tips

Southern Thailand's beaches carry both beauty and responsibility. Railay's pristine state is maintained by the visitors who respect it — carry that ethic with you.

🛕

Phra Nang Cave is Sacred

The cave at Phra Nang Beach is a genuine place of worship dedicated to a sea goddess. The carved wooden offerings inside are sacred objects, not decorations. Treat the site with respect — do not touch or move offerings, and keep voices low near the shrine.

👙

Beach Dress Code

Swimwear is appropriate on the beaches but cover up when walking through the village areas and entering restaurants or shops. Thai people find public semi-nudity in non-beach contexts uncomfortable — a sarong or shorts take 5 seconds to put on.

🌿

Leave No Trace

Railay is a limestone karst ecosystem. Do not remove shells, coral, or rock. Take all rubbish with you — the beaches are clean because visitors respect them. Sunscreen damages coral; use reef-safe formulas in the water.

🤝

Longtail Boat Drivers

Longtail drivers are small business owners, not employees. Negotiate prices politely but don't haggle aggressively — the boats, fuel, and maintenance are their livelihoods. Tipping ฿20–50 for a good crossing is appreciated and customary.
