1 day in Canggu
Only got 24 hours? Here's how to experience the best of Canggu in a single action-packed day.
Canggu Highlights
Surf Lesson & Beach Breakfast
Start the day with an early surf lesson at Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu's most popular break for beginners. The consistent whitewater rolls and sandy bottom make it ideal for first-timers, with dozens of surf schools offering 90-minute lessons including board rental. After surfing, dry off at one of the beachside cafes — Canggu's breakfast scene is legendary, with acai bowls, avocado toast, smoothie bowls, and strong Bali coffee served with ocean views.
Rice Paddy Walk & Tanah Lot Temple
Rent a scooter and ride through the rice paddies that still thread through Canggu's development — the Pererenan and Canggu Shortcut roads pass through lush green terraces that feel worlds away from the beach strip. Continue west to Tanah Lot Temple (30 minutes), one of Bali's most iconic sea temples perched on a rocky outcrop surrounded by crashing waves. The temple is a major Balinese Hindu pilgrimage site and photogenic from every angle.
Echo Beach Sunset & Dinner
Return to Canggu for sunset at Echo Beach, where the surfers catch their last waves as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean. The beach bars along the sand fill with people watching the golden-hour show. After sunset, eat at one of Canggu's excellent restaurants — the area has everything from 20,000 IDR nasi goreng at a local warung to innovative international cuisine. The Batu Bolong strip buzzes with nightlife after dark.
3 days in Canggu
A carefully curated route mixing iconic landmarks, hidden gems, street food, culture, and adventure — designed for younger travelers.
Surf, Beach & Canggu Vibe
Batu Bolong Surf Session
Start with a morning surf at Batu Bolong Beach — Canggu's most popular break, with consistent waves suitable for all levels. The sandy bottom and rolling whitewater make it perfect for beginners, while the outside reef offers faster walls for intermediate surfers. Dozens of board rental shacks line the beach (50,000-100,000 IDR for 2 hours). The vibe is laid-back and communal — you will share waves with a friendly international crowd of digital nomads, gap-year travelers, and local surfers.
Co-Working Cafe & Rice Paddies
Dry off and walk to one of Canggu's famous co-working cafes — the area is the digital nomad capital of Southeast Asia, with dozens of stylish cafes offering fast WiFi, good coffee, and air conditioning. Crate Cafe, Machinery, and Dojo Bali are popular. In the late afternoon, walk or ride through the remaining rice paddies along the Canggu Shortcut road — emerald-green terraces with farmers working the fields, a reminder that Bali's agricultural heart persists alongside the surf scene.
Batu Bolong Sunset & Street Food
Watch sunset from Batu Bolong Beach — the sky turns pink and orange as surfers catch their last rides. The beachside bars (Old Man's, The Lawn, Sandbar) fill with a golden-hour crowd. For dinner, choose between the international restaurant strip on Batu Bolong Road or eat like a local at a warung — Nasi Ayam Ibu Oki and Warung Dandelion serve incredible Indonesian food for 25,000-40,000 IDR.
Tanah Lot, Yoga & Beach Clubs
Sunrise Yoga Session
Join a morning yoga class at one of Canggu's many studios — The Practice, Serenity Eco Guesthouse, or Desa Seni offer daily drop-in classes in open-air shalas surrounded by gardens. Vinyasa, hatha, and yin styles are all available, with classes typically lasting 75-90 minutes. Canggu's yoga scene attracts international teachers and the standard is generally high. Follow yoga with a healthy brunch at a garden cafe.
Tanah Lot Temple
Ride to Tanah Lot Temple, 30 minutes west of Canggu — one of Bali's seven sea temples, built on a rocky island surrounded by crashing Indian Ocean waves. The temple is a major Balinese Hindu pilgrimage site and architectural marvel. At low tide, walk across the exposed reef to the base of the rock for a blessing from the resident priests. The surrounding cliff area has gardens, smaller temples, and viewpoints along the coastline.
Finns Beach Club & Nightlife
Spend the evening at Finns Beach Club, Canggu's most famous beach club with a massive infinity pool, day beds, DJs, and a beach-front restaurant. The sunset here is spectacular — the pool and ocean merge into the golden sky. After dinner, Canggu's nightlife kicks off on Batu Bolong Road — rooftop bars, live music venues, and the legendary Old Man's Thursday night party attract the young international crowd.
Echo Beach, Markets & Pererenan
Echo Beach Surf & Breakfast
Head to Echo Beach for a more challenging surf session — the reef break here produces powerful lefts and rights that attract intermediate and advanced surfers. Even if you do not surf, watching from the beach wall with a coconut is entertaining. Breakfast at one of the Echo Beach cafes — the area is quieter and more local than Batu Bolong, with excellent warungs serving nasi campur (mixed rice plate) and freshly-squeezed juice.
Love Anchor Market & Pererenan
Browse the Love Anchor Market on Batu Bolong Road — a curated collection of boutiques, vintage shops, and art studios in a converted warehouse. Then ride to Pererenan, the quieter village north of Canggu that still retains a strong Balinese identity. Walk through the village temples, watch the daily offering ceremonies, and visit the black-sand Pererenan Beach where local fishermen launch their colourful jukung outrigger canoes.
Final Sunset & Farewell Dinner
Watch your final Canggu sunset from a different vantage — the Berawa Beach area or the cliffside cafes above Pererenan offer alternative perspectives on the golden hour. Have a farewell dinner at one of Canggu's standout restaurants — fresh seafood, Indonesian BBQ, or the creative plant-based cuisine that Canggu has become famous for. The evening energy on the main strip is infectious and the perfect way to close.
7 days in Canggu
A full week to go deep — from famous landmarks to local neighbourhoods, day trips, hidden gems, and proper local immersion.
Arrival & Beach Introduction
Arrival & Canggu Orientation
Arrive at Ngurah Rai Airport and take a taxi or Grab (1 hour) to Canggu. Check into your accommodation — Canggu offers everything from 100,000 IDR ($7) dorm beds to luxury private villas. Rent a scooter (50,000-80,000 IDR per day), which is essential for getting around. Orient yourself: Batu Bolong is the main strip, Echo Beach is west, Berawa is south, and Pererenan is north.
Batu Bolong Beach & First Surf
Walk to Batu Bolong Beach and take your first surf lesson or rent a board. The beach is the social centre of Canggu — surfers, yogis, digital nomads, and travelers all converge here. The wave is gentle and the sandy bottom is forgiving. After surfing, grab a smoothie bowl and settle into the Canggu rhythm: surf, eat, relax, repeat.
First Canggu Sunset & Warung Dinner
Experience your first Canggu sunset from the beach — the Indian Ocean sunsets here are consistently spectacular. Then walk to a local warung for dinner — nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), or nasi campur (mixed rice plate) cost 20,000-35,000 IDR and are delicious. The contrast between the hipster cafe strip and the local warungs just one street back is striking.
Surf Progression & Co-Working
Surf Improvement Session
Take a second surf lesson or paddle out independently. Canggu's waves are consistent — Batu Bolong for beginners, Echo Beach for intermediate, and Berawa for a mix. Multi-day surf camps (3-5 days) are available for serious progression, with video analysis, theory sessions, and guided surf at multiple breaks. The water temperature is 27-29°C year-round, so no wetsuit is needed.
Digital Nomad Life
Experience Canggu's co-working culture at a cafe or dedicated co-working space. Dojo Bali, Outpost, and Tribal are purpose-built spaces with fast WiFi, meeting rooms, and community events. The cafes on Batu Bolong Road — Crate, Machinery, Satu Satu — are popular for laptop work with better coffee and food. The digital nomad community hosts regular meetups, skill-shares, and social events.
Sunset & Social Night
Canggu's social scene revolves around sunset drinks and communal dinners. Join the crowd at Old Man's (Batu Bolong), Pretty Poison, or The Lawn for golden-hour drinks. Many hostels and co-working spaces organise group dinners, pub quizzes, and party nights — the international crowd is exceptionally friendly and easy to connect with.
Tanah Lot & Rice Paddies
Rice Paddy Cycle
Rent a bicycle or ride your scooter through Canggu's remaining rice paddies. The Pererenan and Canggu Shortcut roads weave through emerald terraces where farmers still plant and harvest rice using traditional Balinese subak irrigation. Stop at a paddy-side cafe for breakfast overlooking the terraces — the contrast between the lush green fields and the distant surf is quintessentially Canggu.
Tanah Lot Temple
Ride 30 minutes to Tanah Lot, Bali's most photographed sea temple. The temple sits on a rocky island surrounded by churning Indian Ocean waves, connected to the mainland only at low tide. The complex includes cliff-top gardens, smaller temples, and viewpoints along the dramatic coastline. The spiritual significance is profound — Tanah Lot is one of seven sea temples forming a chain along the Balinese coast, each visible from the next.
Tanah Lot Sunset & Return
Watch the sunset at Tanah Lot — the temple silhouetted against the blazing sky with waves crashing around its base is one of Bali's defining images. After the sun sets, ride back to Canggu for dinner. The route passes through darkened rice paddies and small villages where the evening offering ceremonies create a magical atmosphere of incense and flickering candles.
Yoga, Wellness & Spa Day
Sunrise Yoga & Meditation
Join a sunrise yoga class at one of Canggu's top studios. The Practice, Serenity, and Desa Seni offer classes in open-air pavilions surrounded by tropical gardens. Styles range from power vinyasa to gentle yin and restorative. Many studios also offer meditation and breathwork sessions. Follow with a healthy plant-based brunch at a garden cafe.
Balinese Spa & Wellness
Treat yourself to a Balinese spa experience — traditional massage, flower baths, body scrubs, and holistic treatments are available at a fraction of Western prices. A 90-minute Balinese massage costs 150,000-300,000 IDR ($10-20) at local spas. Spring Spa, Goldust, and the smaller neighbourhood spas all offer excellent treatments. The Balinese massage tradition is deeply rooted and therapists are highly skilled.
Healthy Dinner & Sound Healing
Canggu's wellness scene extends to the evening — sound healing sessions, cacao ceremonies, and ecstatic dance events run regularly. Check community boards at yoga studios and cafes for schedules. For dinner, try one of Canggu's excellent plant-based restaurants — Shady Shack, Peloton Supershop, or Alcove serve creative vegan and vegetarian food that attracts both health-conscious diners and committed carnivores.
Echo Beach, Markets & Nightlife
Echo Beach Surf & Exploration
Surf at Echo Beach — the reef break here produces more powerful waves than Batu Bolong, attracting intermediate and advanced surfers. Even non-surfers enjoy watching from the beach wall with fresh coconut water. Walk north along the black-sand beach toward Pererenan, passing fishermen launching outrigger canoes and Balinese families making morning offerings at beach shrines.
Shopping & Markets
Browse Canggu's shops and markets. Love Anchor Market has curated boutiques, vintage clothing, and art. The Batu Bolong strip has surf shops, jewellery designers, and Balinese craft stores. For authentic local products, ride to the Canggu Sunday Market or the night market in neighbouring Kerobokan for fabrics, woodcarvings, and affordable Balinese homewares.
Canggu Nightlife
Experience Canggu's nightlife at its best. Start with sunset drinks at a beach bar, then move to dinner at a vibrant restaurant. The late-night scene centres on venues like Deus Ex Machina (motorcycles, surf, and music), Pretty Poison (skate park and pool), Old Man's (backpacker institution), and the various rooftop bars. Live music, DJ nights, and themed parties run throughout the week.
Finns Recreation & Berawa
Finns Recreation Club
Spend the morning at Finns Recreation Club — a massive complex with waterslides, a trampoline park, a bowling alley, and the Splash Waterpark. The day-pass gives access to multiple pools, a fitness centre, and sports facilities. For families or groups, it is a full day of entertainment. The complex also houses Finns Beach Club on the beach, which operates separately.
Berawa Beach & Cafes
Head south to Berawa, a slightly more upscale neighbourhood than central Canggu. The beach here is quieter, the restaurants more refined, and the vibe more relaxed. Walk along Berawa Beach past the iconic Finns Beach Club, through the fishermen's huts, and along the dark sand. The cafes in Berawa — Milk & Madu, Coffee Cartel — are excellent for a late-afternoon coffee.
Berawa Sunset Dinner
Berawa has some of Canggu's best restaurants — Ji Terrace by the Sea, Mason, and Como Beach Club offer upscale dining with ocean views. Alternatively, eat at one of the excellent local warungs in the Berawa backstreets — the food is authentic, affordable, and delicious. Watch sunset from the beach or a clifftop restaurant as the fishing boats return to shore.
Final Surf & Departure
Dawn Surf & Farewell
Paddle out for a final dawn surf session at your favourite break. After a week in Canggu, you will know the tides, the best take-off zones, and the local lineup etiquette. The early morning water is glass-smooth before the wind picks up, and sharing waves with the small dawn crew is the purest Canggu experience. Dry off with a final smoothie bowl and strong Bali coffee.
Last Shopping & Packing
Pick up last-minute souvenirs — Balinese sarongs, handmade jewellery, artisanal coffee, and coconut oil products are popular choices. Return your scooter and check out of accommodation. Many Canggu guesthouses and hostels have late check-out or baggage storage for afternoon departures.
Departure or Onward Travel
Take a Grab or taxi to Ngurah Rai Airport (1 hour) for your departure flight. Alternatively, continue your Bali journey — Ubud (rice terraces and culture) is 90 minutes inland, Uluwatu (clifftop temples and world-class surf) is 90 minutes south, and Nusa Penida (dramatic cliffs and snorkelling) is a boat ride away. Canggu is an excellent base but only one piece of the Bali puzzle.
Budget tips
Eat at warungs
Local warungs serve nasi goreng, nasi campur, and mie goreng for 20,000-35,000 IDR ($1.50-2.50) — a fraction of the cafe prices. The food is authentic, fresh, and filling. Warung Local is a Canggu institution.
Rent a scooter
Scooter rental (50,000-80,000 IDR/day) is essential in Canggu and much cheaper than taxis. Monthly rates drop to 700,000-1,000,000 IDR. Make sure you have an international driving permit and always wear a helmet.
Surf board rental not lessons
After your first lesson, rent boards independently (50,000-100,000 IDR for 2 hours). Lessons are 300,000-500,000 IDR — worth it for day one, but unnecessary after you can stand up and paddle out.
Happy hour deals
Many Canggu bars run happy hours (4-7pm) with 2-for-1 cocktails and discounted beers. Bintang (local beer) costs 25,000-35,000 IDR at warungs versus 60,000-80,000 at beach clubs.
Book accommodation monthly
If staying a week or more, negotiate weekly or monthly rates at guesthouses and villas. A private room that costs 300,000 IDR/night might drop to 150,000-200,000 IDR/night for monthly rental.
Skip the beach clubs
Beach clubs charge 200,000-500,000 IDR minimum spends. The public beaches are free, the sunsets are identical, and a Bintang from a warung costs a fraction of a beach-club cocktail.
Budget breakdown
Daily costs per person in US dollars. Canggu is one of the world's best-value beach destinations — accommodation, food, and activities are remarkably affordable, though beach clubs and Western-style cafes inflate costs quickly.

Cultural tips
Canggu is a surf town built on Balinese Hindu culture. Respect the offerings, temples, and ceremonies that surround you, and you will experience the warmth and spirituality that makes Bali truly special.
Respect Hindu Culture
Bali is deeply Hindu. Do not step on or kick offerings (canang sari) placed on the ground — they are daily prayers. Remove shoes before entering temples and homes. Dress modestly at religious sites (sarong and sash required).
Environmental Awareness
Bali has a serious plastic waste problem. Carry a reusable water bottle and bag. Avoid single-use plastics. Support businesses that use sustainable practices. The Canggu recycling initiatives and beach clean-ups welcome volunteers.
Photography Etiquette
Ask permission before photographing ceremonies, offerings, and people. Do not touch or climb on temple structures. During cremation ceremonies (ngaben), observe respectfully from a distance unless invited to participate.
Language
English is widely spoken in Canggu but learning basic Indonesian earns enormous goodwill: terima kasih (thank you), selamat pagi (good morning), berapa harga (how much). Balinese people are warm and appreciative of any effort to speak their language.
Support Local Economy
Choose warungs over Western-style cafes for at least some meals. Buy from Balinese artisans. Use Balinese guides and instructors. The tourist economy benefits many families but the money needs to reach the local community, not just international businesses.
Ceremony Days
Nyepi (Day of Silence, usually March) shuts down the entire island — no travel, no lights, no internet. Galungan and Kuningan are major Hindu celebrations with ceremonies and processions. These cultural events are beautiful to witness and should be respected.
