Money-saving tips

Share jeep hire costs

Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, and Khardung La trips require hired jeeps. Share with other travellers to split the 5000-8000 INR daily cost 4-5 ways. Hostel notice boards and travel agents match groups daily.

Stay in guesthouses

Leh guesthouses offer clean rooms with mountain views for 800-1500 INR including breakfast. They are warmer and more atmospheric than hotels, and the families often cook excellent Ladakhi dinners.

Eat Ladakhi food

Tourist restaurants charge 300-500 INR per meal. Local Ladakhi restaurants and guesthouse kitchens serve thukpa, momos, and skyu for 100-200 INR. The local food is also better suited to the altitude.

Book permits through agents

Inner Line Permits for Pangong and Nubra cost 600 INR through a travel agent who handles the paperwork. Try to combine permit processing with jeep booking for the best overall deal.

HRTC buses for Manali/Srinagar

HRTC and JKSRTC buses to Manali and Srinagar are dramatically cheaper than private taxis. The journey is long but the scenery is the best road trip in India.

Bring warm clothes from home

Leh shops sell warm clothing at inflated tourist prices. Bring your own thermals, down jacket, and warm hat to avoid overpaying for basics.
