Money-saving tips
Beach lodge dorms
Cape Maclear beach lodges offer dorm beds from $5–8 USD per night. Fat Monkeys, Gecko Lounge, and Mgoza are the most popular backpacker spots with beachfront locations, communal kitchens, and a social vibe that makes it easy to meet other travellers.
Eat local chambo
A plate of grilled chambo with nsima and vegetables costs 2,000–4,000 MWK ($1.50–2.50 USD) at local restaurants. Lodge restaurants charge double. Eat where the locals eat — the fish is fresher and the portions are bigger at village-side stalls.
Rent gear, don't tour
Snorkel sets rent for 1,500–2,000 MWK per day and kayaks for 5,000–8,000 MWK. Organised snorkel or kayak tours cost $20–40 USD. Self-guided exploration is easy at Cape Maclear — the best spots are marked and locals will point you in the right direction.
Local minibuses
Minibuses connect lakeside towns for a fraction of private transfer costs. Cape Maclear to Monkey Bay is 1,500 MWK, Monkey Bay to Lilongwe is 3,000–5,000 MWK. They are crowded but an authentic Malawian experience and incredibly cheap.
Self-cater at markets
Chembe village market sells fresh tomatoes, onions, avocados, and bread at local prices. Most lodges have communal kitchens. A full day of self-catered meals costs under $3 USD — hard to beat anywhere in the world.
Free activities abound
Swimming, beach walks, village wandering, sunset watching, and even basic snorkelling from shore cost nothing. Lake Malawi is one of the few destinations where you can have an incredible time spending almost nothing on activities.
