When to go

The Lake of Stars: a freshwater paradise of cichlid-rich reefs, golden beaches, and the warmest welcome in Africa, all on a shoestring budget.

May – Oct is the busiest window in Lake Malawi, so accommodation and flights go first. Book ahead. The shoulder weeks either side are usually quieter for the same reason.

Getting Around in Lake Malawi

  • Cape Maclear is 3–4 hours from Lilongwe via Monkey Bay. AXA and local buses run daily. Minibuses are frequent but crowded
  • Within Cape Maclear everything is walkable. Kayaks and boats provide access to islands and remote beaches
  • Roads between major towns are paved but potholed. Local minibuses are cheap but slow, so allow extra time for all journeys
