1 day in Tangier

Only got 24 hours? Here's how to experience the best of Tangier in a single action-packed day.

Day 1

Tangier — The Gateway City

🌅 Morning

Medina & Kasbah at First Light

Tangier's medina is compact and navigable compared to Fes or Marrakech — a good place to practise Morocco if it's your first time. Enter from the Grand Socco (the main square linking old and new Tangier) and follow the narrow lanes uphill toward the Kasbah. The Kasbah Museum (Dar el Makhzen, MAD 20) occupies the former sultan's palace with its mosaic courtyard and artefacts from Tangier's cosmopolitan 20th century as an International Zone. Climb the Kasbah walls for the most dramatic view in Tangier — the Strait of Gibraltar stretching west, Spain a visible 14km strip across the water, and the Mediterranean merging into the Atlantic.

Tip: The medina is best before 9am when the shopkeepers are setting up and the lanes are quiet. Tangier's medina has fewer aggressive touts than Marrakech — still ignore anyone who "happens to be going the same way" and offers to show you around for free.
☀️ Afternoon

Cape Spartel & Hercules Caves

Taxi (MAD 60–80 each way, or MAD 150–200 for a round-trip with waiting) to Cape Spartel — the northwestern tip of Africa where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. A small lighthouse marks the point. The Caves of Hercules, 1km south, are the most famous landmark near Tangier: sea caves carved partially by ancient Romans quarrying millstones, with an opening shaped like Africa's outline. The caves are genuinely dramatic at high tide when waves surge through. Admission MAD 15. Return via the Diplomatic Forest road with views along the Moroccan coast.

Tip: Visit the Caves of Hercules at high tide (check tide tables) for the most atmospheric sea surge effect. The opening that looks like Africa's map is on the seaward side — walk through to the ocean-facing chamber.
🌙 Evening

Petit Socco, Sunset & Dinner

The Petit Socco (small square in the heart of the medina) was the legendary meeting point for Beat Generation writers — William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, and Paul Bowles all spent time in Tangier. Sit at Café Central or Café Tingis for tea and watch the evening crowd. Walk the Boulevard Pasteur along the clifftop at sunset for the sweeping view of the strait. Dinner in the medina: tagine (MAD 60–80), brochettes (MAD 40–50), or pastilla (MAD 70–90). The restaurant El Morocco Club (on Rue de la Plage) does excellent Moroccan cuisine in a beautifully restored 1930s setting for MAD 150–200 per person.

Tip: Boulevard Pasteur at sunset is when Tangier's mixed Franco-Moroccan population promenades. The light on the Gibraltar Strait is extraordinary. It's one of the world's great crossroads and the view makes it feel like it.

Budget tips

Tangier is inexpensive by Moroccan standards

Tangier is significantly cheaper than Marrakech for accommodation and food. Budget hostel: MAD 80–150 ($8–15). Street food: harira soup MAD 5, msemen pancakes MAD 5–8, kefta sandwich MAD 20. Full restaurant dinner with wine: MAD 200–300 ($20–30).

Ferries from Spain are easy and affordable

FRS ferry from Tarifa (Spain) to Tangier: €22–35 each way, 35 minutes. Baleária ferry from Algeciras: €25–40, 1.5 hours. Book online at frs.es or balearia.com. Arrive 30 minutes early for passport control. The ferry terminal is the new Tangier Med — 40km from the city centre (taxi MAD 250–300).

Negotiate taxis before entering

Petit taxis (red) are metered in theory but many don't use meters for tourists. Agree on the price before entering: medina to Cape Spartel MAD 60–80, port to medina MAD 50–70. Grands taxis for intercity (Tangier to Chefchaouen: MAD 60/seat shared, 3 hours) are good value.

Day-trip to Chefchaouen is worth it

The Blue City of Chefchaouen is 3 hours from Tangier by grand taxi or CTM bus (MAD 60–80 one way). If you have 2 days in Tangier, spend the second day in Chefchaouen — it's among Morocco's most photogenic towns. The blue-painted medina lanes and mountain backdrop are justifiably famous.

Budget breakdown

Daily costs per person in Moroccan Dirhams (MAD 10 ≈ $1). Tangier is one of Morocco's most affordable cities with easy access from Spain — a full day costs well under $30 on a budget.

Practical info

⛴️

Getting There

  • Ferry from Spain: Tarifa–Tangier Ville (35 min, FRS, €22–35) or Algeciras–Tangier Med (90 min, Baleária/Trasmediterránea, €25–40). Tangier Ville port is central; Tangier Med is 40km away and requires a taxi or bus transfer to the city
  • Flights: Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG) has Ryanair connections from London Stansted, Brussels, and major European cities. Buses from the airport to city centre: MAD 4 (Line 17). Taxi: MAD 80–100
  • Train from Casablanca or Marrakech: ONCF trains to Tangier Ville station (3.5hrs from Casablanca, MAD 100–150 second class). The new high-speed Al Boraq train from Casablanca takes 2 hours 10 minutes (MAD 250)
🗺️

Getting Around

  • The medina, Kasbah, and main sights are all walkable from the city centre. The medina is small enough to explore without a guide — use Google Maps (works well offline in Tangier)
  • Petit taxis (red, metered) for in-city trips: MAD 10–30 for short hops. Agree on price first. Grand taxis (beige) for intercity: shared routes to Tetouan (MAD 30/seat, 1hr), Chefchaouen (MAD 60, 3hrs)
  • Tangier has a local bus network (MAD 4 flat fare) but routes are confusing for visitors. Taxis are cheap enough that the bus is rarely worth the confusion
💱

Money & Costs

  • Dirhams only available inside Morocco — do not try to buy MAD before arrival. Change euros or dollars at the airport (reasonable rates) or at banks in the city centre (slightly better). ATMs are plentiful
  • Many medina shops quote prices in euros due to Spanish proximity. Always check if a price is in MAD or EUR before agreeing. The Kasbah area in particular can target visitors with inflated euro prices
  • Card acceptance is improving in Tangier but cash is still king for taxis, medina shops, street food, and most small restaurants. Carry MAD 200–300 in small notes at all times
📋

Entry Requirements

  • EU, US, UK, and Canadian passport holders enter visa-free for 90 days. Passport must be valid for 6+ months. No health requirements as of 2024
  • Morocco customs: do not attempt to import alcohol beyond duty-free limits. Drone permits require advance application through ANRT — entering with an unregistered drone risks confiscation
  • Currency: dirhams cannot be exported. Convert leftover MAD back to EUR/USD at the airport before departure. Keep exchange receipts for reconversion

Cultural tips

Tangier has been a crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Arab world for centuries. Its complicated colonial history, Beat Generation legacy, and living Islamic culture reward curiosity over speed.

🕌

Islam & Public Space

Morocco is a Muslim country. Dress modestly in the medina and Kasbah — covered shoulders and knees for both men and women. The call to prayer sounds five times daily. Ramadan significantly changes opening hours and eating customs — be respectful about eating or drinking in public during fasting hours.

🤝

Negotiation Culture

Bargaining in the souk is expected and is a social interaction, not a confrontation. Start at 40% of the asking price and meet somewhere in the middle. Once you agree on a price and begin to take the item, the deal is made — walking away after agreeing is considered rude.

📸

Photography in the Medina

Ask permission before photographing people in the medina, especially women. Many people will agree; some won't. Never photograph police, soldiers, or government buildings — it is illegal. The Kasbah walls and rooftop views can be photographed freely.

🎭

Tangier's Cosmopolitan History

From 1923–1956 Tangier was an International Zone governed jointly by multiple colonial powers — a status that created extraordinary cultural mixing, attracted writers and spies, and made it one of the most permissive cities in the world. This history is palpable in the architecture and the city's identity. Paul Bowles' novel The Sheltering Sky is set partly here and gives essential context.
