How long are you staying?

1 day in Taj Mahal

Only got 24 hours? Here's how to experience the best of Taj Mahal in a single action-packed day.

Day 1

The Taj Mahal & Agra in One Day

🌅 Morning

Taj Mahal at Sunrise

Arrive at the East Gate before sunrise to witness the Taj Mahal emerge from the morning mist. The white Makrana marble shifts from pale blue to warm pink as the sun rises behind you. Entry is ₹1,100 for foreigners including water and shoe covers. Walk through the Great Gate — that first glimpse of the Taj framed in the archway is the most iconic moment in travel. Spend two hours exploring the marble platform, the inlay work of semi-precious stones, and the echoing interior chamber.

Tip: The East Gate has shorter queues than the West Gate. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. Friday is closed for prayers — plan around this.
☀️ Afternoon

Agra Fort & Baby Taj

Auto-rickshaw to Agra Fort (₹600) — the massive red sandstone Mughal fortress where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his own son, spending his final years gazing at the Taj Mahal he built for his wife. The view from the Musamman Burj octagonal tower is heartbreaking. Then visit Itimad-ud-Daulah (₹210), known as the Baby Taj — a jewel-box tomb covered in marble inlay that pioneered the pietra dura technique later perfected at the Taj.

Tip: Agra Fort's Musamman Burj is where Shah Jahan died gazing at the Taj — the view from here across the river is profoundly moving.
🌙 Evening

Mehtab Bagh Sunset & Agra Street Food

Cross the Yamuna River to Mehtab Bagh (₹300) — the Mughal garden directly behind the Taj Mahal with the most photographed sunset view in India. The white marble dome turning gold and pink in the evening light is extraordinary. Then head to Sadar Bazaar for Agra's famous petha (sweet pumpkin candy, ₹100–200/box) and chaat. Dinner at Pinch of Spice near Fatehabad Road for excellent Mughlai cuisine (₹250–500).

Tip: Mehtab Bagh closes at sunset — arrive one hour before. A telephoto lens or phone zoom captures the Taj beautifully from this distance.

3 days in Taj Mahal

A carefully curated route mixing iconic landmarks, hidden gems, street food, culture, and adventure — designed for younger travelers.

Day 1

Taj Mahal — The Wonder of the World

🌅 Morning

Taj Mahal at Sunrise

Enter through the East Gate before sunrise for the most magical experience at the Taj Mahal. The white Makrana marble transforms colour as the light changes — pale blue, soft pink, warm gold. Entry is ₹1,100 for foreigners. Pass through the Great Gate and let the symmetry and scale overwhelm you. The pietra dura inlay of jasper, jade, turquoise, and lapis lazuli on the marble surface is exquisite. The interior chamber echoes for 28 seconds — whisper and listen.

Tip: Sunrise visits mean smaller crowds and the best light. The East Gate opens 30 minutes before sunrise. Bring a tripod for long-exposure dawn shots.
☀️ Afternoon

Agra Fort — Mughal Power & Prison

Auto-rickshaw to Agra Fort (₹600) — the red sandstone fortress that served as the Mughal capital. The Diwan-i-Am (public audience hall) and the white marble Diwan-i-Khas (private audience hall) show the progression from military power to refined luxury. Shah Jahan's imprisonment in the Musamman Burj — an octagonal marble tower with the Taj visible across the river — is one of history's most poignant stories. Audio guide (₹150) is highly recommended.

Tip: Visit the Nagina Masjid (Gem Mosque) inside the fort — a tiny private mosque made entirely of white marble, often missed by visitors.
🌙 Evening

Mehtab Bagh & Sadar Bazaar

Head to Mehtab Bagh (₹300) for the sunset view of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna. This is where the Mughals planned a mirror tomb in black marble — never built, but the gardens remain. Watch the Taj turn from white to gold to pink. Then explore Sadar Bazaar for petha (Agra's signature sweet, ₹100–200/box at Panchhi Petha), marble inlay handicrafts, and leather goods. Dinner at Mama Chicken for butter chicken (₹200–350).

Tip: Agra's marble inlay craftsmen work in the lanes behind the Taj — visit a workshop to see the same pietra dura technique used on the Taj itself.
Day 2

Fatehpur Sikri — The Ghost Capital

🌅 Morning

Fatehpur Sikri Palace Complex

Day trip to Fatehpur Sikri (37 km, ₹200 by shared auto or ₹800 private). Emperor Akbar built this entire city in 1571 as his capital, then mysteriously abandoned it 14 years later. The red sandstone palace complex (₹610) is phenomenally preserved. The Panch Mahal — a five-storey palace of 176 columns with no two alike — is architecturally stunning. The Diwan-i-Khas has a central pillar connected to four walkways where Akbar debated scholars of every religion.

Tip: Hire a government-approved guide at the ticket office (₹400–600) — the stories of Akbar's court bring these empty palaces to life.
☀️ Afternoon

Jama Masjid & Buland Darwaza

Adjacent to the palace complex is Fatehpur Sikri's Jama Masjid (free entry) — one of India's largest mosques, with the Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence) towering 54 metres high. This victory gate, built after Akbar conquered Gujarat, is the tallest gateway in the world. Inside the mosque courtyard is the tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti — a masterpiece of marble lattice screens where devotees tie threads to make wishes. The white marble against the red sandstone is stunning.

Tip: Tie a thread at Salim Chishti's tomb to make a wish — pilgrims have done this for over 400 years. The marble jali screens are exquisitely carved.
🌙 Evening

Itimad-ud-Daulah & Agra Twilight

Return to Agra and visit Itimad-ud-Daulah (₹210) — the Baby Taj. Built in 1628, this tomb pioneered the marble inlay technique that the Taj Mahal later perfected. The garden setting and smaller scale allow you to appreciate the craftsmanship up close. Each flower panel uses dozens of semi-precious stones. Then walk along the Yamuna River bank for twilight views of the Taj. Dinner at Peshawri at ITC Mughal for legendary kebabs (₹800–1,500) or Dasaprakash for South Indian thali (₹200–300).

Tip: Itimad-ud-Daulah is quiet and uncrowded compared to the Taj — the marble inlay here is arguably more intricate. Late afternoon light is perfect.
Day 3

Taj by Moonlight & Hidden Agra

🌅 Morning

Kinari Bazaar & Local Life

Explore Agra's Kinari Bazaar — the old market near Jama Masjid crammed with wedding decoration shops, jewellery stalls, and street food vendors. Try bedai with jalebi (₹40) — Agra's signature breakfast of fried puffed bread with spicy potato curry and fresh jalebi. The market atmosphere is authentic and tourist-free. Walk to Agra's Jama Masjid (free) — built by Shah Jahan's daughter Jahanara, with a distinctive zigzag marble pattern on its dome.

Tip: Kinari Bazaar's bedai-jalebi breakfast is an Agra institution — look for the busiest stall near the mosque. The jalebi must be hot and crispy.
☀️ Afternoon

Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra

Auto to Sikandra (10 km, ₹300 return) to visit Akbar's Tomb (₹210) — the Mughal emperor's mausoleum set in a vast garden where wild monkeys and deer roam freely. The five-storey structure blends Hindu, Christian, Islamic, and Buddhist motifs — reflecting Akbar's religious tolerance. The geometric marble inlay on the upper levels is stunning. The gardens are peaceful and rarely crowded — a welcome contrast to the Taj.

Tip: The wild deer and langur monkeys in Sikandra's gardens make this feel like a safari and monument combined. Keep food hidden from the monkeys.
🌙 Evening

Taj Mahal Moonlight Visit

On full-moon nights (and two days either side), the Taj Mahal opens for a limited-capacity night viewing (₹750, advance booking required through ASI). Seeing the white marble glow under moonlight is an utterly transcendent experience — the dome seems to float in darkness. Only 400 visitors are admitted in eight groups of 50. If not a full-moon night, revisit Mehtab Bagh for a final evening view. Farewell dinner at Bon Barbecue rooftop with Taj views (₹400–700).

Tip: Book moonlight Taj tickets through ASI's official website at least one week ahead — they sell out immediately. The 8:30pm slot is best.

Budget tips

Composite monument ticket

The ASI Composite Ticket covers Taj Mahal + Agra Fort + Fatehpur Sikri + Baby Taj for ₹1,560 — saving ₹560+ over individual tickets. Buy at any participating monument ticket counter.

Stay in Taj Ganj

The backpacker neighbourhood directly behind the Taj has guesthouses from ₹400–1,000/night. Rooftop restaurants with Taj views serve thalis for ₹150–300. Saniya Palace and Hotel Kamal are solid budget picks.

Train travel is cheapest

Delhi–Agra by Gatimaan Express (₹755 AC Chair, 1h40m) or Shatabdi (₹550, 2h). Agra–Jaipur trains from ₹300 Sleeper class. Book on IRCTC app weeks ahead — tickets sell out fast.

Street food capital

Bedai-jalebi breakfast ₹40, chaat ₹30–50, biryani ₹100–150, thali ₹120–200. Agra's food is Mughlai heritage — cheap and exceptional. Pinch of Spice is the mid-range sweet spot.

Negotiate auto-rickshaws

Fix prices before boarding — Agra autos don't use meters. Typical fares: station to Taj ₹100, Taj to Fort ₹80, Agra to Fatehpur Sikri ₹800 return. Use Ola/Uber in Delhi for fair pricing.

Free & cheap attractions

Mehtab Bagh is only ₹50 for Indians. Kinari Bazaar, Jama Masjid, and Yamuna riverbank walks are free. Jaipur's bazaars are free to explore — the architecture is the attraction.

Cultural tips

The Taj Mahal sits at the crossroads of Hindu and Islamic culture. Understanding mosque etiquette, market customs, and how to deal with Agra's persistent touts will transform your experience.

🕌

Mosque Etiquette

The Taj Mahal is a functioning mosque on Fridays (closed to tourists). Remove shoes at all mosques including Fatehpur Sikri's Jama Masjid. Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees. Free robes are available at some entrances.

🤝

Dealing with Touts

Agra has India's most persistent touts. "The Taj is closed" is always a lie. "I'll show you a shortcut" leads to a shop. Walk past firmly with a polite "no thank you." Never engage in conversation with strangers near monuments.

📸

Photography

Tripods are technically not allowed inside the Taj Mahal complex but phone selfie sticks are fine. Don't photograph military installations. Ask before photographing people. Drone photography is strictly illegal at all monuments.

🍽️

Food Culture

Eat with your right hand if eating without cutlery. Agra's Mughlai cuisine is its heritage — try seekh kebabs, biryani, and petha sweets. Vegetarian food is widely available. Don't offer beef to Hindus or pork to Muslims.

🎭

Bargaining

Expect to haggle at all markets — start at 30% of asking price. Marble inlay souvenirs vary wildly in quality and price. Government emporiums have fixed prices. Never feel pressured — walk away and the price drops.

🛕

Sacred Spaces

The Taj Mahal is Mumtaz Mahal's tomb — show respect in the main chamber. Don't shout, play music, or sit on the marble platform. Walk clockwise at Hindu temples. Remove shoes at all Sufi shrines and tie a wish-thread at Salim Chishti's tomb.
