Best time to visit Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia has two seasons — dry and wet — but the timing of each varies significantly by country and subregion. November through February is the best overall window for mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos), offering dry weather and comfortable temperatures across most of the region. However, Indonesia's dry season peaks in July-August, and the Philippines is best from December to May. The right time to visit depends on where you're going.

November–February: peak dry season across mainland SEA

This is the most popular window for backpackers and the best overall choice if you're covering mainland Southeast Asia:

  • Thailand — dry and comfortable across the country. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) are at their best. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) can see rain in November but clears by December.
  • Vietnam — southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) is dry and hot. Central Vietnam dries out by January. Northern Vietnam is cool and occasionally foggy in December-January — pack layers for Sapa and Ha Long Bay.
  • Cambodia — dry season. Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh are both pleasant. Temples are less muddy but more crowded with peak-season tourists.
  • Laos — dry and cool, especially in the north. Luang Prabang is at its most comfortable. The Mekong is low, making some slow boat journeys more challenging but the scenery dramatic.
  • Philippines — dry season underway. Palawan, Cebu, and Siargao are at their best from December onward.

March–May: hot and dry, shoulder season

Temperatures climb across the region, but crowds thin and prices drop from their January-February peak:

  • Thailand — extremely hot, especially in Bangkok and the central plains (35-40°C). Islands remain bearable with sea breezes. Songkran (April 13-15) is the Thai New Year water festival — one of the most memorable events in the region, and worth planning a trip around.
  • Vietnam — the south gets very hot and humid. Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An) is pleasant and sunny. The north warms considerably.
  • Cambodia — April is the hottest month. Angkor visits require early starts and serious heat management; visit temples at dawn or dusk.
  • Indonesia — transitioning to dry season. From April onward it is increasingly dry across Bali, Lombok, and Komodo. Good shoulder season timing before July-August crowds.
  • Philippines — peak dry season. The best months for island hopping and beach travel across most of the archipelago.

June–October: monsoon season on mainland SEA, dry season in Philippines and eastern Indonesia

Wet season in Southeast Asia is not what most people imagine. The typical pattern is a sunny morning, building clouds in the early afternoon, a heavy downpour for one to three hours, then clearing. Many experienced travelers prefer this period:

  • Thailand — monsoon on the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi). The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao) remains relatively dry and is a good alternative. Northern Thailand and Bangkok see rain but stay very accessible.
  • Vietnam — central coast (Da Nang, Nha Trang) is actually dry and sunny in June-August — the best time for central Vietnam beaches. The north and south are wetter.
  • Indonesia — dry season peaks. July-August is the best time for Bali, Lombok, Komodo, and diving across the archipelago.
  • Philippines — dry in most western and central areas. Palawan is excellent. Eastern areas face typhoon risk from July onward.
  • Cambodia and Laos — wet season with occasional road flooding in rural areas. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and dramatically green landscapes.

Wet season travel tips: book accommodation with covered common areas, carry a light waterproof layer, and plan active sightseeing for mornings. Prices are 20-40% lower than peak season across most destinations.

Traveling Southeast Asia with a companion

Weather changes are easier to handle with a companion. When a monsoon shuts down your planned beach destination, two people can decide together where to pivot — and splitting accommodation costs means trying a different island or a different country doesn't blow your budget.

Logistics across multiple countries are also simpler with a travel partner: navigating border crossings, splitting taxi costs between airports and city centres, and keeping watch on gear during overnight buses all become less stressful. roammate matches travelers heading to the same destinations at the same time, so you can find a companion whose dates and itinerary overlap with yours. Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Thailand?

November to February is the best time to visit most of Thailand. The weather is dry and temperatures are cooler, especially in the north. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) is at its best during this window. April brings Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival — worth timing a visit around despite the heat. Avoid the Andaman coast from June to October when the monsoon hits the west coast.

Is it worth visiting Southeast Asia in monsoon season?

Yes, for many travelers monsoon season is worth considering. Rain typically comes in afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours. Prices drop 20-40%, crowds thin significantly, landscapes are lush and photogenic, and the heat is broken by rain. The key is understanding which countries are dry when — while Thailand's west coast is wet in July, Vietnam's central coast is dry, and Indonesia peaks in July-August.

What months should I avoid in Southeast Asia?

No single month makes all of Southeast Asia bad to visit. The heaviest monsoon affects Thailand's Andaman coast from June to October. Vietnam's central coast faces typhoon risk from September to November. The Philippines' eastern seaboard is most exposed to typhoons from July to November. However, when one area is wet, another is typically dry — so flexible travelers can visit year-round by following the dry seasons.
